Concept

The front of this flyer was inspired by a remark made by Peter Atkin's in the 2006 Atheist Debate at Edinburgh University:

The statement indicates plainly that in a world without a creator there is no meaning. You can hear the quote in context here. Some have said that science is there for the how-questions and faith is there for the why-questions. But why should faith and reason be detached into non-overlapping spheres? Edinburgh Creation Group aims to bring together both the how and the why questions in lively presentations and discussion. We hope that people will find satisfing answers to both the hows and the whys.

This season Edinburgh Creation Group helps to launch the new book: The Evolution Crisis. This book contains the stories of five Atheist scientists who became creationists. Our theme for this season's flyer is resources. We now have all our videos on the web in a variety of formats. In addition to this we have a data DVD with full screen versions of all our videos. This is ideal for a resource table at a church or an outreach table. PDF files for producing a DVD sleeve are also included. And of course we have a new series of eight fascinating talks about creation.

Darwinism is often presented as a "Tree of Life" in biology text books. Atheists rage that religion is the major cause of war in the world. Yet more have died through atheists such as Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao and Hitler than through all the religious wars in history. Hitler used evolution as the justification of his killings. Years later on Hitler's birthday two bullied school children went on a killing spree at Columbine High School again their justification was evolution:

On his Web page, Eric Harris listed many things he hated, but Darwin's theory of evolution, particularly his suggestion of natural selection, stood in stark contrast. "YOU KNOW WHAT I LOVE??? Natural SELECTION!," he crowed. "It's the best thing that ever happened to the Earth. Getting rid of all the stupid and weak organisms ... but it's all natural! YES!"

On the day of the massacre, Eric Harris wore a white T-shirt with the inscription "Natural Selection" on the front. To some, that's just a footnote in the coroner's report. But when we pause to ponder it further, we are well on our way to explaining why that tragedy happened.

Hitler killed six million Jews believing they were less than human and that he was helping humanity. In the UK we have killed six million unborn babies believing much the same. Darwin's theory has taught us they are not people at all but collections of chemicals.

"The Origin of Species" is often described as being as important to secular humanism and atheism as the Bible is to Christianity. However many will be surprised to find out that the root of the theory of evolution can be trace back to the spiritual belief in reincarnation. So to Dawkin's dismay the wide acceptance evolution is not leading the masses to embrace atheism but drawing them back to its ancient roots in eastern religiona and paganism.

To most the concept of a resurrection seems impossible. When a body dies it starts to decompose; even though all the chemicals needed for life are present. Today many people believe in something even more problematic; that hydrogen from the Big Bang, over billions of years formed itself into living people: life from non-life. Many think of this as science, but this view requires blind faith because there were no observers and the vast amounts of time can never be repeated. The term "Paradigm Shift" means a total change of the way society views the world. The flyer suggests that this is what is currently needed.

The Images on the front of this flyer were composited using PaintShop Pro 5 (this came free with a computer magazine a few years back). The space shots are from NASA the flower and the bird are by audreyjm. The text was added in Inkscape a free vector graphics editor. The back of the flyer was created completely in Inkscape. The Edinburgh Creation Group logo was created in GIMP. The Paradigm Shift logo was designed by Marc Surtees for his science shop with the same name. Both sides were then exported as 600 dpi PNG images and taken to the printer on a USB stick. I used Green Print as a printer they charge £170 for 5000 full colour double sided flyers, with a one week turn around.

The graph paper in this image represents planning and design and the globe represents the universe.

Credits

The image on the front was created in Blender a free 3D graphics and animation package. The graph paper was scanned and the Earth was made by mapping a NASA image map onto a 3D sphere. The back of the flyer was made in Inkscape, but the title and graph paper were rendered in Blender. Blender and Inkscape are very good for working on flyers because they allow you to work at an infinite resolution before exporting to a bitmap format for printing.
